Among Us is one of the most successful multiplayer games of the decade. For some reason, the game gained worldwide popularity only 2 years after the initial release. In 2020, streamers noticed the game and quickly attracted over 150 million concurrent players from various platforms. But is it really as good as they say? Let’s see!
Graphics and Sound – 8/10
Among Us features pretty basic 2D visuals, but the style of characters and the environment is very easy to recognize. The handless colorful astronauts with toony animations look so funny that they have become incredibly popular meme characters on YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, and other popular social networks.
The soundscape in the game is also minimalistic but features some catchy sci-fi sounds. The deep 3D background noise of the starship also adds a lot of volume to the overall atmosphere.
Controls – 8/10
The game has perfect controls almost on all platforms, but Xbox One/Series X/S, and PS ⅘ versions are less comfortable because they don’t have default qwerty keyboards. As the game involves a lot of texting with other players, you may face difficulties with voice text input.
Gameplay – 10/10
Although most of the game is based on texting, it is incredibly immersive. If the randomizer assigns you as a crew member (which is more probable), you should patrol the ship and complete various simple quests to keep it going. At the same time, you have to call emergency meetings with the whole crew if you spot a dead crewmember or have evidence that one of the players is the impostor.
If you’re lucky enough to be assigned an impostor, you have to act like you’re a loyal guy and kill as many pacific crewmembers as possible to win. Each dead body will raise the risk of being identified, so it’s important to lie as professionally as you can to persuade others of your innocence.
Lasting Appeal – 9/10
An average match in Among Us lasts around 10-15 minutes, but the gameplay is so exciting that you’re likely to stay for 4-5 matches right from the start. Players are always different, so as their personalities behind the characters. This makes the entire game highly unpredictable, challenging, and catchy. The only drawback of the game is the lack of starship types. It would be more exciting to return to the game and explore different ships.
Social Game of The Year
Despite the relatively low popularity of digital social deduction games, Among Us is a real breath of fresh air for the entire genre. The gameplay has enough juice to catch you for multiple hours and train your logic and intuition.
