The game is separated into two different gameplay parts - School Life and Class Trial. During School Life, you find out more about the characters and their backstories by talking to them or interacting with them. You can also choose who to interact with, and you will unlock more information about them as you do. The Class Trial is where you play detective. You have to try to find the culprit, who has committed a crime. You have to use your evidence to present to the rest of the class, to build up a case against the culprit.
The graphics are 2D style, with some 3D elements. The characters are very well drawn, with good details. The backgrounds are nicely done too. The animations are smooth, but the lip syncing isn't the best. Graphically, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is a 2D, top-down adventure game with fully animated characters and backgrounds. The graphics are not particularly impressive, but the animated nature of the characters and backgrounds is a nice touch.
